Ballinskelligs facts

• Dark Sky Reserve: Ballinskelligs is part of the Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve. It is one of the few places in the world with “Gold Tier” status for its lack of light pollution.

• The Perseids: This meteor shower happens every August. It is caused by Earth passing through the debris left behind by the Swift-Tuttle comet.

• Ancient Stars: This region has been a place of wonder for thousands of years. Nearby stone circles suggest that ancient people also studied these same Kerry skies.

• Gaelic Heart: Located in a Gaeltacht (Irish-speaking) area, Ballinskelligs is famous for its blue flag beach and the nearby Skellig Islands.

Location

Ballinskelligs is located on the Iveragh Peninsula in South West Kerry. It sits along the famous Ring of Kerry and the Wild Atlantic Way. The area is remote and quiet, providing the perfect conditions for astrophotography.
